About Leadership Fort Wayne (LFW)
Background
Leadership Fort Wayne (LFW) was founded in 1983 by the Fort Wayne Corporate Council and Indiana University Purdue University Fort Wayne with seed funding provided by Lilly Endowment, Inc. The purpose was to ensure high quality leadership and active involvement of informed and dedicated citizens to meet the present and future challenges that face the Fort Wayne community. Since 1983, over 1,000 participants, reflecting a cross section of the community, have completed the programs and are now taking an active role as community trustees.
Mission
The mission of Leadership Fort Wayne is to train, prepare and inspire individuals to positively impact the community through meaningful engagement.
Outcome Goals
To instill an understanding of community trusteeship and a life-long commitment to community service.
To provide information about the community–its history, people, strengths, challenges and opportunities.
To develop 21st century leadership skills and capacities.
To provide opportunities to practice leadership skills and utilize knowledge gained.
Program Overview
The LFW program consists of nine full-day programs (September through May), an opening two-day retreat, a closing retreat, opportunities for hands-on experience, and an internship on a not-for-profit board of directors. Area leaders and experts provide information about the community and its history, institutions, socio-economic composition, and current issues. Training sessions develop participants' leadership skills and capacities. Programs are held at appropriate sites to provide knowledge of the physical and institutional aspects of Fort Wayne.
Expectations
Participants are expected to make a commitment to LFW, attend at least 80% of the regular full-day program sessions, complete assignments and work on a Community Action Team (CAT) project. Absences or lack of participation may result in a participant leaving the program or making up absences the following year.
Cost
Tuition for the program is $1,500 per participant. Individuals may be sponsored by their business or organization, or they may nominate themselves. Traditionally, tuition is paid by the participant's employer, business, or sponsoring organization. A limited number of scholarships are available.
