Frequently Asked Questions

What are the program's components?

The LFW program consists of nine full-day programs (September through May), an opening two-day retreat, a closing retreat, a Community Action Team (CAT), and an internship on a not-for-profit board of directors. Area leaders and experts provide information about the community and its history, institutions, socio-economic composition, and current issues. Training sessions develop participants' leadership skills and capacities. Programs are held at appropriate sites to provide knowledge of the physical and institutional aspects of Fort Wayne.

How does one become a part of LFW?

Through a competitive application and selection process, a minimum of 40 participants are chosen on their own merits by an anonymous committee according to the information provided on the application. Application is open to persons age 21 and over living and/or working in the Fort Wayne area. The selection committee strives to assemble as diverse a group as possible—men and women from different career, educational, political, social and cultural backgrounds. When more applications are received than there are spaces available, the selection committee is forced to eliminate excellent candidates with outstanding credentials. These candidates are strongly encouraged to reapply. Up to one half of the class members are nominated by LFW's corporate sponsors.

What does it cost?

Tuition for the program is $1,500 per participant. Individuals may be sponsored by their business or organization, or they may nominate themselves. Traditionally, tuition is paid by the participant's employer, business, or sponsoring organization. A limited number of scholarships are available.

Is there an age limit?

Applicants must be 21 years and older.
